Saturday May 26, 2012 from 9am-5pm Introduction to Herbalism Guest Instructor - Mimi Hernandez Location - Centro Ashé Farm -
Introduction to Herbalism What are Herbs and How are they are used - What is Herbalism? How are herbal remedies prepared and taken? Discover the many ways that herbs can be used medicinally; from soothing baths to healing salves, to plants right off the garden paths, from herbs processed through standardization, to powders extracted through percolation. Find out what it all means and learn plenty of herbal tips along the way!
Easily sourced kitchen/garden herbs - Let’s explore plants that are readily available and easy to grow in our gardens, Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Thyme, & Sage, for instance. These lovely, easy to grow, and fragrant members of the Lamiaceae (Mint) family are just as versatile for health promotion as they are in the kitchen. Come and learn how these and other mints have been used traditionally for health and how scientific evidence supports many of these uses.
Mountain Roots! - Discover the lore, tradition, and science behind Appalachia's most popular and native medicinal roots, from the well known and economically exalted roots of the culture like Ginseng and Black Cohosh to the local secret favorites like Yellowroot and Stoneroot and many more! Come away with tidbits on Appalachian culture past, present, and future and its contribution to our herbal materia medica.
Saturday June 23, 2012 from 9am-5pm Body System Therapeutics and Anatomy and Physiology - Western and Energetic Guest Instructor - Ashley Sky Litecky Location - Sky House Yoga - 903 Gist Avenue and Fenton Street, Silver Spring, Maryland
During this all day intensive, students will learn the basics of anatomy & physiology, organ function, tissue states, from the western medical and eastern (Chinese and Ayurvedic) traditions. The day begins with a Plant Spirit Yoga class from 9:15 - 10:45 am that will give students an experiential way to connect with the body and the energetics of several plant species. A review of common illnesses and case studies will be used to show the overlap between these two systems and the use of plant medicines in both models.
Saturday July 14, 2012 from 9am-5pm Herbal Medicine Making and Herbal Body Care Instructor - Molly Meehan Location - Centro Ashé Farm -
This class will be a hands on day including herbal plant walk around the farm, tincture making, fermentation workshop including kim chi and kombucha, as well as a medicine making rotation including ear ache oil, tea formulas, herbal salves, and dream pillows. We will go through folk medicine making techniques and students will have an opportunity to get hands on harvesting and creating their own medicine!
Saturday August 25, 2012 from 9am-5pm Guest Instructor - Rabiah Al Nur Location - Centro Ashé Farm - Topics - Plant Spirit Medicine, Plant Allies, Creating Sacred Space using Herbs, Herbal Rituals We will learn through mediation and hands on experience to feel into the plants in order to communicate with them more effectively. Learn to direct energy to the plants and to feel for what they need from us. Listen to their counsel as to what they might want to gift us, celebrate through offerings and ceremony, share insights gained with each other.

Whether you are curing an ailment or simply maintaining good health, your kitchen can provide the nourishing remedy. In this interactive workshop, you will journey from the historical roots of foods used as medicine to the present-day nutritional foods to heal the mind and body. Exploring the healing foods from Africa to the Americas, this session will provide practical applications to transform your kitchen to a healing pharmacy to nourish yourself and your loved ones. This session will cover pantry makeover list, healing properties of foods, food preparation techniques, cookware and healing recipes. Using case studies, you be able to assess what’s meal can heal or kill your mind and body. You will be transformed in how you see, eat and touch food again after this intensive session on food as medicine.
Registration, Cost and Logistics: The Grassroots Herbal and Holistic Wellness Program is a 6 month course which includes five day-long intensives as well as registration to the Mid-Atlantic Women's Herbal Conference in Kempton, PA on October 6, 2012. Males are welcome to attend the program, and can simply omit the final class on Oct. 6 and pay a reduced amount. Please note transportation to and from the conference is not included in this registration fee - we will work together as a group to carpool to Pennsylvania. Each class please bring a ready-to-eat potluck dish to share for lunch! Teas and beverages will be provided.
Full Series Costs: Women $500 (includes all in-class class materials, final conference) Men $400 (includes all in-class materials, does not include final conference)

Worktrades/Reduced Cost As it is important to us that all members of the community truly have access to our programs, two work-trade spaces are available for each series for those who may need financial assistance. The total cost of the series for worktrades is $108 (negotiable). Worktrades are usually asked for some sort of trade especially in the garden (no skills necessary, just a willingness to work in the dirt!) or well as graphic design.
